Описание к видео The Curious Case of Pi Earth: The Planet with a Mathematical Orbit

Associate professor Julien de Wit and graduate student Prajwal Niraula, researchers at MIT’s Disruptive Planets Group, talk about Pi Earth, the Earth-sized planet that zips around its star every 3.14 days, and the importance of making science fun.

Researchers discovered signals of the planet in data taken in 2017 by the NASA Kepler Space Telescope’s K2 mission. In 2020, by zeroing in on the system earlier with SPECULOOS, a network of ground-based telescopes, the team confirmed that the signals were of a planet orbiting its star. And the planet still circles its star today, with a pi-like period, every 3.14 days.

Pi is a mathematical constant that represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Denoted by the Greek letter 'π', pi is an irrational number with an infinite decimal representation that is widely used in mathematics and science.

Among the world's largest science centers, the Museum of Science engages millions of people each year to the wonders of science and technology through interactive exhibitions, digital programs, giant screen productions, and preK – 8 EiE® STEM curricula through the William and Charlotte Bloomberg Science Education Center. Established in 1830, the Museum is home to such iconic experiences as the Theater of Electricity, the Charles Hayden Planetarium, and the Mugar Omni Theater. Around the world, the Museum is known for digital experiences such as Mission: Mars on Roblox, and traveling exhibitions such as the Science Behind Pixar. Learn more at https://www.mos.org/
