Its intangible nature arouses both enthusiasm and fear, which are not counterbalanced by its very tangible infrastructure. This attraction or repulsion highlights how ambivalently new technologies may be viewed. Beyond the ‘rejection of progress’ attitude — which has been rooted in our civilisation since the invention of the wheel — the issue evolves around the social acceptability of digital technologies or their applications. The very best inventions sometimes face strong rejection for omitting to assess their social acceptability from the design phase. This is precisely where convergence is needed between the so-called "hard" sciences and the human and social sciences. We reject traceability, yet we share our most personal data with Big Tech; we are critical towards cyberspace investigations, yet we remain silent when it comes to profiling.
