Chronotypes-Personality behavioural syndromes in wild marine fish

Individual differences in daily activity timing, or chronotypes, are associated with various physiological processes, including other behaviours. Despite this, this relation is seldom investigated in non-human animals. Focusing on the pearly razorfish, a species commonly studied for fish chronotypes, we examined individual variation in four aspects of personality in controlled settings. Notably, behavioural types across the spectrum of aggressiveness were identified, and behavioural syndromes were found amongst exploration, activity, and boldness traits, independent of body size and condition. After their time in the lab, these fish were returned to their natural environment, tracked individually via acoustic telemetry to determine their chronotypes. Our findings suggest no correlation between the exploration-activity-boldness syndrome and chronotypes. However, a significant link between chronotypes and aggressiveness was detected: later-awakening and later-resting individuals were more aggressive than early-risers and early-resting. This research breaks new ground by establishing a link between chronotypes and behavioural traits like aggressiveness in fish, hinting at a possible explanation for behavioural variation in the interplay of individual internal clocks and environmental factors.
