Which is standing as a witness of history all over Bangladesh. Along with this, each zamindar house has a history of its own.
Zamindari system continued in the Indian subcontinent from Mughal rule to British rule.But before the British rule, this system of zamindari was called "jagirdari" system. During the rule of the British, the system of zamindari was introduced in the Indian subcontinent in a different modern way. Because the British used this zamindari system as a tool to rule the Indian subcontinent more easily. The then Governor General Lord Cornwallis abolished the Jagirdari system in 1793 under the name "Perpetual Settlement" and introduced the Zamindari system.
As a result it changed from "Jagirdari" system to "Zamidari" system. Cornwallis himself was a member of a landed family in Britain. The main motive behind his introduction of this zamindari system was to collect government revenue easily from all over India. Also to easily keep the people of India under their rule. The zamindari system of medieval or Mughal rule was quite different from this zamindari system.
At that time those who purchased zamindari from the British built a palace at a fixed place to exercise their rule over the subjects and conducted the judicial proceedings and resided there. The houses built by those zamindars were called zamindar houses. The zamindars exercised their rule over the subjects from this house. So these houses of zamindars are known as zamindars houses to the common people.At that time the zamindars were the owners of a lot of wealth. So they used to build their houses with various beautiful designs in the building with wonderful crafts. Which can be seen by observing the houses of various landlords.
