"Well, I think there may be one or two early demonstration showcase projects which shoe people things are happening, but in the first year or so the great bulk of activity will be repairing infrastructure rather than rebuilding it, support into communities, work on critical, immediate issues such as , de-mining, re-integration of refugees and returnees into communities - all of that quick impact, very urgent stuff which shows a dividend and gets communities back."

STORYLINE:

The United Nations Development Programme's administrator in Afghanistan on Friday conducted a fact-finding tour of run-down areas in central Kabul.

Mark Malloch Brown visited local people directly affected by wars and years of deprivation in an effort to assess how UNDP resources might be best employed in the redevelopment of the city.

Brown inspected damaged houses and spoke with local boys about the state of their education and that of their sisters.

The administrator said that initial UNDP activity would centre around the urgent repair of infrastructure and support for communities and that major rebuilding projects would come later.

He said there was an opportunity to construct a new economy for Afghanistan which should not be missed.
