A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an x-ray of the womb and fallopian tubes in which a soft catheter is passed through the cervix and a liquid called contrast is passed along the tube flowing into the womb and the fallopian tubes to allow us to see if the fallopian tubes are open. This is carried out in the X-ray Department.

-To assess the fallopian tubes to see if they are patent (open) or occluded (blocked) to identify any barriers to your fertility.

-It is usually done by a gynecologist and consultant radiologist will be available for consultation if necessary.

-HSG is only carried out  within the first 9 days of your menstrual cycle.
-When you arrive at the X-ray Department you will ask you to change into a hospital gown.  You will be taken into the X-ray room where You will be asked to lie on the X-ray table, generally flat on your back. The practitioner will keep everything sterile as possible and will wear sterile gloves. Initially the examination is Your vagina will be cleaned with an antiseptic, then a speculum will be used to open vaginal wall. Then a small plastic flexible tube (catheter) will be positioned through the opening of the cervix until the tip is inside the uterine cavity. Then, the contrast (a colourless liquid that shows up black on X-rays) will be injected into the tube to highlight the uterus and fallopian tubes.
