The structure of a bee nest in the wild follows a typical pattern but will be affected by the location of the entrance.

Pollen is always stored closest to the entrance; next to that, you will find the brood nest, and behind that will be the honey stores. Over time, as the nest expands, honey will be stored in less predictable locations, but the pollen will almost always be closest to the front door.

The reasons are simple. When the worker bees out collecting pollen return to the nest, they offload their haul directly into the cells. It makes sense to store the pollen in this location so that those workers can quickly access the closest deposit point before returning to work.

Nectar collectors, on the other hand, are met near the front door by younger bees. These bees have the nectar transferred into their honey stomachs (a process called trophallaxis) and then move that resource to cells deep into the nest, usually on the other side of the brood.
