The Western Maryland Railroad (WM) was a Class I railroad that operated in the U.S. states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

1. **Formation**: The WM was chartered in 1852 and began construction in 1857. It was built to provide a rail link between Baltimore and the Ohio River and was part of the plan to connect Baltimore to the Midwest.

2. **Construction**: The construction faced challenges due to the rugged terrain of the Appalachian Mountains. To overcome this, the railroad employed innovative engineering techniques such as switchbacks, tunnels, and bridges.

3. **Expansion**: By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the WM expanded its network, reaching Cumberland, Maryland, and Hagerstown, Maryland, and extending into Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

4. **Freight and Passenger Service**: The WM primarily served as a freight carrier, transporting coal, lumber, and other goods from the region. It also operated passenger services, connecting communities along its route.

5. **Challenges**: Like many railroads, the WM faced challenges with competition from other modes of transportation, economic downturns, and changes in the industry.

6. **Decline and Merger**: In the mid-20th century, the decline of coal as a primary source of energy and changes in transportation patterns led to financial difficulties for the WM. In 1964, it merged with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O).

7. **Legacy**: Despite its merger and eventual absorption into the Chessie System, the WM remains significant in railroad history, particularly for its engineering feats and the unique challenges it overcame to traverse the Appalachian Mountains.

Today, parts of the WM's former route are operated by other railroads or have been converted into rail trails for recreational use.
