The betrayal of Julius Caesar is one of the most famous moments in Roman history, marking the end of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. The event took place on March 15, 44 BCE, known as the Ides of March. Caesar, a military general and statesman, had gained immense power and influence in Rome, which led to growing fear among senators that he aimed to become a dictator for life, undermining the republic's traditions.

A group of senators, including Caesar's close friend Marcus Junius Brutus, conspired to assassinate him, believing that his death would restore the Republic's power. Brutus and another senator, Gaius Cassius Longinus, led the conspiracy. On the fateful day, Caesar was lured to the Senate under the pretense of attending a meeting. As he entered the Senate chamber, the conspirators surrounded him and stabbed him multiple times.

The betrayal is immortalized in Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar, where Caesar's last words are often quoted as “Et tu, Brute?” ("and you, Brutus?"). While there is no historical evidence that Caesar said this exact phrase, it captures the depth of his shock and betrayal, as Brutus was like a son to him.

Ironically, Caesar's assassination did not restore the Republic. Instead, it led to a period of civil wars, ending with his adopted heir, Octavian (later Augustus), becoming the first emperor of Rome, solidifying the shift from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.
