Описание к видео Transplanting a Mature Rabbit-Eye Blueberry Bush Pt. 2.

In this video I demonstrate planting a mature rabbit-eye blueberry bush (Vaccinium ashei). Note, I forgot to mention that since a lot of the original soil came with the bush, it also came with the mycorrhizal fungi necessary for healthy growth of a blueberry.

A note for when transplanting potted blueberry plants. If the plant is good and dormant when you buy it, and if it looks like the plant has been growing in the pot for a while, the new plant will grow much faster if you break up that root ball, spread the roots and cut the top part of the plant way back. However, put any of the soil from the pot that falls off the roots as you break them up in the hole with the plant. That way you keep the mycorrhiza with the plant.

A note for those planting purchased bare root blueberries. If you are planting the blueberries in an area where there are no nearby plants, you will need some soil and / or old leaf litter from around a healthy mature blueberry bush to put in the soil with the new bushes. That will soil and leaf litter will supply mycorrhiza colony the plant needs for healthy growth. There may be commercially available inoculum out there, but it needs to be one of the species which evolved to create mycorrhizal relationships with blueberries.

If there are healthy blueberry bushes growing nearby which is true all over my property, the correct mycorrhizal fungi are already in the soil in sufficient quantities. Don't get talked into buying a product you don't need.

A general note about fruit trees in pots. Often the tree was originally growing in the ground and was dug out of the ground and sent to market shortly after it was dug. In that instance, treat the fruit tree like it is a bare root tree. Be sure and cut it way back because most of the roots are still in the ground from which the tree came. In that case you may need to add some mycorrhiza when planting if you don't have a tree of the same species already growing nearby. A bit of soil and litter from around a healthy mature tree of the same species is better than the commercial stuff.

If the tree has been growing in the pot for a while, you can tell because the roots will be somewhat rapped around the pot. If the tree is good and dormant, its best to break up the root ball and spread the roots, and then cut the top of the tree way back. (Always cut the top of the tree way back.) You don't need to add mycorrhiza because its in the soil that the tree is growing in. Just make sure that all the soil from the pot ends up in the hole with the tree. If the tree is actively growing, don't break-up the root ball, but cut some of the roots wound around the pot, and tweeze them out just a bit. Be sure to cut back the top of the tree or bush and keep on top of watering. A newly planted actively growing tree or bush is far more fragile than one that was good and dormant.
