Dicreosaurus
At the beginning of the last century, the remains of a dinosaur similar to the American Diplodocus, only much smaller in size, were discovered in Africa. In 1914, the new lizard was named a dicraeosaur and included in the Diplodocus family - it actually turned out to be a relative of the most recognizable giant. Or more precisely, a distant ancestor.

Yes, Dicraeosaurus is the most primitive form of Diplodocus, which miraculously survived until the end of the Jurassic period, and therefore stands out sharply among all other sauropods of that time. The main difference is in size and proportions, as well as in the structure of the skeleton, on which nature developed bioengineering solutions that allowed more advanced diplodocus to successfully survive.

Dicreosaurus is an animal with an average body length of about 13 m and a mass of 3-4 tons. The lizard had a large barrel-shaped body, a relatively short neck and tail, while the neck was not very flexible, and therefore Dicreosaurus could only feed on low-growing plants such as bushes and small trees.

Probably, the dicraeosaur, unlike its larger relatives, could run quickly, and if it was not possible to escape from predators, then it used its powerful tail - getting hit with such a club is not very pleasant.

Dicraeosaurus is named so for good reason: literally translated, it means “forked lizard,” which hints at the special structure of its spine. The fact is that each vertebra had a spinous process bifurcated at the top, resembling the letter Y in shape. Ligaments were attached to these processes, as well as powerful muscles of the back and tail. This design worked like a crane, allowing the neck to move freely and even rise on its hind legs. Probably, all this externally looked like two ridges running along the entire body of the animal - from the head to the tail.

These primitive dinosaurs were very successful in terms of the struggle for survival, because they are believed to have outlived even their more advanced relatives, Diplodocus. So from an evolutionary point of view, “primitive” does not always mean “worse.”
