VTEC was developed in Japan by Honda to improve the volumetric efficiency and to produce more power with less displacement, this is due to Japanese regulations that taxes cars based on engine size, unlike the USA where more power was gained by increasing the engine size.

We use a PO8 sohc vtec cylinder head from a Honda D16Z6 engine in this video, however, in principle, the Honda Kseries and Bseries vtec systems work the same way with just minor differences in layout.
D16Z6, D16Y9, B16, B18 GSR (B20V) and the performance variations of K20 and K24 (F-series and H-series (H22 - H23) and even J-series also use the same vtec system just with a different layout.
