Описание к видео Rohingya refugees adopt a symbol representing their struggle and their power

August 25, 2025, marks eight years since the campaign of extreme violence by the Myanmar authorities against Rohingya people in Myanmar’s Rakhine state in 2017. Myanmar's military forced more than 700,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh, where the new arrivals joined thousands of other Rohingya who had left during earlier waves of violence and persecution in Myanmar. Most of these refugees still live in fragile shelters in overcrowded settlements. They are not permitted to work and must rely on dwindling humanitarian aid for survival.

The Rohingya are a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority who have lived in Myanmar for hundreds of years. Because they are denied citizenship by Myanmar’s government, they are officially stateless and face particular challenges obtaining access to health care and other basic rights.

In this video, Rohingya community members, artists, and advocates in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, describe how they feel about their situation and why they have adopted the taro leaf as their symbol.
