Beautiful, Clever, Bold, Bad, and Unscrupulous: Bianca Cappello and Her Anglo-American Audiences

Bianca Cappello was a powerful patron of the arts and an influential member of the sixteenth-century Florentine ducal court. Yet during her lifetime and in the centuries following her death she figured prominently, and usually negatively, in literally dozens of biographies, plays, operas, historical fiction, poems, films and historicizing paintings and sculptures produced by an international group of scholars, authors, and artists. This talk will examine Bianca’s reputation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries among Anglo-Americans, and the ways in which their understanding of her biography reflected contemporary attitudes rather than historical fact.

Jacki Musacchio is a Professor of Art at Wellesley College. Her publications include The Art and Ritual of Childbirth in Renaissance Italy (1999), Art, Marriage, and Family in the Florentine Renaissance Palace (2008), and The Art and Life of Francesca Alexander 1837-1917 (2025). This talk is part of a book project analyzing the biography, and historiography, of Bianca Cappello.
