Black and white photography using FUJIFILM X100F and Nikon with Voigtländer Prime Lens
(If you just want to see the photos then skip to 11:43 into the video.)

When you take photos you create something unique.

We often think that other people have more experience, have better equipment and much more talent, than our-self. So they take better and more meaningful photos than what we can take.

I say this is simply wrong.

The truth is that every photo is different. Nobody sees the world the same way, and viewed through the lens of a camera, the result you get will reflect your viewpoint, your vision and your personality.

The word amateur comes from the Latin language and means “to love”. Being an amateur simply means that you are not being paid. Being an amateur does not mean that your work is not any good. And most likely it is those photos that a pro and an amateur takes for the love of it that become the photos that we love and appreciate the most.

Take the works of these two great photographers: Joel Meyerowitz and Om Malik.
One is an amateur the other a professional. Both have their own style of seeing true the lens, and their photos reflect this difference.

I chose two different cameras for this video. The Fujifilm X100F with its fixed 23 mm prime lens, and my trusty beloved Nikon D7000 with a prime to match - the 58 mm Voigtländer Nokton SL II. These two lenses have some serious image fidelity.

When I use the term 'image fidelity' I mean that these two lenses optical output is copied exactly and that the photo taken will reflect this in such a way that you would not be able to recognize whether there were anything between the camera and the subject. All the tonality is being preserved more faithfully than using lesser quality lenses. For those of you who have been spoiled using quality optics from Swarovski, Zeiss or Leica have chosen these optics because of the ability of the lens to differentiate between smaller and smaller details of more and more nearly similar tonal values. This is also referred to as micro contrast. An analogy that come to mind is this crude saying: "Kiss a non smoker and feel the difference". Sometimes you must try it for yourself before you truly understand this difference. It was not before I went out and bought my Spotting Scope and then later my Voigtländer lens and my X100F that it was clear to me that such optics is in a class of its own. And the image output is truly more pleasing to the eye than using my camera with some of my other lenses.

I have great joy using these two cameras and lately I have started printing some of my most beloved photos from one of Europe’s leading professional photographic labs for art printing, film processing, retouch, mounting, framing and exhibition services. The result I get using this company is outstanding. (I have not found any such outstanding print company here in The Philippines. If you can recommend such a company here in the Philippines, please post your recommendation below and I might give them a try.)

Of the two hours it took me to walk around our place and take photos I used my Fujifilm camera the most. Seeing true the electronic viewfinder with my chosen film simulation is simply magical. And using the Optical Viewfinder is pure joy.

My Nikon feels simply great and well balanced in my hand with the Voigtländer prime at the front. The strap is made by the company Barton 1972.

Even though my Nikon D7000 is becoming a relatively old camera I am not in the market for any replacement Nikon. But I have set my eyes on some older and newer primes from Nikon, Voigtländer and Mitakon that all have lenses with serious image fidelity that I am considering to add to my small lens collection.

I chose five photos to show you in this video (seven if you include the two from the first half of this video.) All images was shot in RAW. I converted them to .tif using Fujifilm X Raw Studio for my Fujifilm files and Nikon's Capture NX-D for my Nikons files. Only exposure compensation was changed and Acros or Monochrome selected before the image was exported as a TIF file to be used for this video.

I know some of you live in large cities and countries other than the Philippines. You might even have a street where you live - so you go out and make some great memories.

If you have any questions please leave them in the comments below. Note: I will remove all negative / insulting and spam comments - keep the comments positive and and I will respond as best I can.

Until next time. All the best.
Bye bye and see you soon again.
