The Importance of Measuring Seed Depth After Planting

Pioneer Field Agronomist Ron Joiner provides seed depth insight and discusses the importance of measuring seed depth after planting. For corn, planting too shallow places the crown too close to the soil surface, which hampers nodal root development. Plants with poor root development can struggle to take up water and nutrients and can be adversely affected during periods of summer drought. Shallow planting can also expose seedlings to herbicide residues, increasing the potential for herbicide injury. Conversely, planting too deep can place the seed at a greater risk of emergence problems resulting from surface crusting.
