Dr. Cohan explores both motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease—an incurable neurodegenerative condition—and examines potential underlying causes of these symptoms.

He reviews emerging treatment therapies aimed at symptom management, while providing an in-depth explanation of the disease’s cellular mechanisms and its effects on the brain.

Dr. Charles Cohan serves as the Data Science Manager at the Gateway Institute for Brain Research. His work is centered on leveraging advanced computational techniques and personalized medicine to address complex neurological challenges.

Dr. Cohan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan in 2009. He then pursued his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Miami, completing it in 2015. During his doctoral studies, he investigated neuroprotective mechanisms to prevent injury following cardiac arrest and stroke under the guidance of Dr. Perez-Pinzon. Following his Ph.D., Dr. Cohan worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Miami for three years, focusing on models of white matter injury.

In 2018, Dr. Cohan joined the Gateway Institute for Brain Research, where he initially conducted both bench science and computational work. Over the past seven years, he has progressed to manage the Data Science department and leads several research initiatives. His current research initiatives include integrating computational modeling, bioinformatics, and in vitro testing to develop innovative treatments for Parkinson's Disease, aligning with the institute's mission to find a cure.
