is Stevie the new Veronica Mars?

I’m a HUGE fan of Veronica Mars, so if I’m comparing anything to that show, you know I’m all in. But while the Truly Devious series is probably not something I’m going to take too seriously (I’m not going to become a die-hard fan of it), I’ve still enjoyed it for what it is—a bloody good time.

The series follows Stevie, a teenage girl who’s basically like a modern-day Veronica Mars—a mystery-solving prodigy. The story alternates between two timelines: one from 1936, where a disappearance/murder took place, and the present day, where Stevie is investigating it. She’s attending a special school that lets her focus on solving crimes, and the whole setup is pretty cool. The first big mystery is all about this 1936 crime, but as Stevie uncovers clues, she starts to notice strange things happening in the present, making it seem like they might be connected.

By the end of book 2, Stevie solves the original 1936 case, but the present-day murders are still unresolved. It’s not a clean wrap-up, which keeps things interesting. There’s a part of me that feels the clues sometimes appear a little too conveniently, but honestly, I was so hooked that it didn’t bother me. The pace and drama are enough to keep me engaged, even when the mystery feels a bit too easy for Stevie to crack.

What’s cool about the later books is that they take on more of a standalone vibe, introducing new mysteries in each one. In book 4, Stevie investigates a murder at a summer camp from the 1970s, and in book 5, she’s off to England, where a 1995 crime is waiting to be solved. Each new book feels fresh, with new settings and twists to keep things exciting.

At this point, I’m fully invested in the series. I want to see where it goes next, especially with books 6 and 7 rumored to be coming. It's not as deep as Veronica Mars, but it’s still a fun, gripping mystery series. I’m definitely along for the ride.
