When I was in high school, my dad lost his job. My mom had just had my baby brother so she couldn’t work. The market was bad and even though my dad was doing everything he could to find a job, he wasn’t having any luck. We were using up all of our savings and it was getting more and more difficult to get our bills paid. I didn’t tell any of my friends about our money problems, even though I knew it wasn’t my fault, I felt kind of embarrassed.

One night I was laying in bed, scrolling through Instagram when I got a friend request. I checked the profile and it was a very attractive guy my age. He looked to be around my age and his name was Chris. He had a decent amount of followers, and most of his pictures were of him and his friends or related to sports. I decided to accept his friend request. After a few minutes, he sent me a message. “I hope this isn’t too forward, but you’re very pretty and I would really like to get to know you better if that is okay with you,” he wrote, including a smiley face.

I was flattered, I didn’t have a lot of confidence and it was pretty rare for someone to compliment me like that. I shot him a message back and told him that I would be happy to get to know him. We spent the next hour or so making small talk. He was thinking about studying law. I told him I was planning to go to college too, even though deep down I knew we wouldn’t have the money for it.
