David Wilkie shocks the dominant USA to win gold in the men's 200m breaststroke event at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games.



The United States men's swimming team dominated the competition at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, winning all events but one: the Men's 200m Breaststroke. And the one who stopped the team's perfect record was not the most likely competitor, representing Great Britain, David Wilkie.

Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka to Scottish parents, swimmer David Wilkie had already won a silver medal at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games in the men's 200m breaststroke event. His finest moment came in Montreal, where Wilkie not only broke American supremacy but also won Great Britain's first swimming gold medal since the London 1908 Games.

David Wilkie retired from professional swimming after winning the Montreal Games.
