Tech Tip Tuesday: 3 Sounds = 1 Snare Drum

Before we start, I wanted to clarify that this was simply an experiment. There is no right or wrong drum sound as long as that sound serves the music. Don’t get me wrong -- there are great drum sounds that stand alone and sound amazing. Yet, most sounds are created to serve a specific music application.

The first sound is this snare drum wide open with no dampening. I love the focused attack with some lower beefy undertones. Depending on this situation, I might have to add dampening or adjust the tuning, but overall, I would use this sound as is.

This next sound is the same snare drum with the same tuning, just with a Big Fat Snare Drum The Original - Lite added. This sound is great for a quick and easy beefy tone. The fact that I didn’t have to change the tuning is always a plus. I loved this sound a lot more than I thought I would.

The last tone is the three-tension rod tuning hack we did last week. Surprisingly, this was my least favorite sound of them all. I felt like it was too dead and had almost no resonance. This tuning is still a usable sound if I was playing a little differently. I also want it to have longevity in my drum head and hoops, and this doesn’t help if done consistently.

These sounds are all applicable. The key is to know what situation or song needs that specific sound. Figure that out, and no sound will ever be a waste of your time.

What do you guys think? Which sound popped out to you the most? Is there a sound you didn’t like? Leave a comment. Let’s talk about it!

Stay creative, and have a great rest of the week. Love you, guys!! Okay. Byeeeee. 🥁🤓👊🏻❤️🙏🏻
