Returns come with the season. And with e-commerce. But in the last five years, returns accounted for five billion pounds of waste, according to Vogue Business. A brand's return policy is a key deciding factor for customers looking to purchase from them. Meaning a difficult or unruly policy is more likely to drive potential and existing customers away.

Yet that doesn't mean disposal has to be the first and only option in processing those returns - for returns are quite expensive. The National Retail Federation cites a survey done in 2020 which found that for every "$1 billion in sales, the average retailer incurs $106 million in merchandise returns." Consider throwing away $106 million in merchandise away. One Amazon warehouse in the UK throws out 130,000 returns every week.
