Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Delimitation Commission has submitted its final report for the delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies. Delimitation became necessary when the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 increased the number of seats in the Assembly following the revocation of special status of J&K under Article 370. The Delimitation Commission was set up in March 2020 and was headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai along with the Chief Election Commissioner and J&K’s Chief Electoral Officer as members. Delimitation is crucial for kick-starting the political process in J&K. The changes have been opposed by many opposition parties.
