STORYLINE:
Former Filipino president, Joseph Estrada, who was ousted in a 2001 "people power'' revolt on corruption allegations, is running for mayor of Manila and will be hoping to capitalise on his movie star popularity, particularly among the poor.
Estrada was mobbed by supporters and the media as he cast his ballot on Monday in the mid-term elections.
More than 52 (m) million people are expected to cast their votes across the Philippines in mid-term elections for 18,000 congressional and local posts.
Ramon Casiple, political analyst, believes that Manila is one of the most interesting contests in the country, which sees the incumbent Mayor Alfredo Lim against Joseph "Erap" Estrada.
"Lim (referring to Mayor Alfredo Lim) is of course Liberal Party, the President (Aquino) himself has campaign for him but Erap (Estrada) in his own right is a major political force not only in metro Manila but at national level," he added.
Lim is a former Manila police chief and was a former ally of Estrada.
Estrada, who is now 76 years old, was ousted from office in 2001 and later convicted on charges of plunder before being pardoned.
Estrada, a former actor who also has been vice president, senator and a long-time mayor of suburban San Juan, has promised urban renewal, jobs and law and order in the crime-infested Philippine capital.
