Singapore, officially known as the Republic of Singapore, is a city-state located in maritime Southeast Asia. It’s situated about one degree of latitude (137 kilometers or 85 miles) north of the equator, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The country’s territory comprises one main island, 63 satellite islands and islets, and one outlying islet.

Singapore is known for its strategic position on the strait between the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, which has made it the largest port in Southeast Asia and one of the world’s greatest commercial centers. The city-state has the second highest population density in the world. Despite this, there are numerous green and recreational spaces due to extensive urban planning.

The nation recognizes four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil, with English being the lingua franca. The multicultural population is predominantly Chinese, with substantial minorities of Malays and Indians.

Singapore’s history dates back at least eight hundred years. It was a maritime emporium known as Temasek and subsequently a major constituent part of several successive thalassocratic empires. Its modern history began with the arrival of Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company in 1819.

Today, Singapore is often referred to as the “Lion City” or “Garden City” due to its many parks and tree-lined streets. It’s also been called “instant Asia” because it offers a glimpse into the cultures brought to it by immigrants from all parts of Asia.
