In this video, we demonstrate three important spider guard sweeps. Before 1970 there was only the closed guard, then from 1970-1980 the open guard and spider guard were introduced to help smaller opponents defend against larger opponents. From 1980-1990 the De La Riva guard was introduced and finally in 1996 the half guard was introduced. While these guards are continually evolving, they all share this basic lineage.
