Описание к видео Immigrants Face Deadline Amid Harvey Recovery

(8 Sep 2017) Among the nearly 800,000 young immigrants protected by DACA, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, thousands live in Texas and Florida _ two states with huge numbers of immigrants. They also have to grapple with the aftermath of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma that could make it even harder to meet the filing deadline of October 5.
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday that the program will no longer take new applicants. Current participants whose permits are set to expire in the next six months submit their applications for a two-year renewal by Oct. 5.
Around one-quarter of DACA recipients _ about 200,000 people _ have permits that will expire before December, according to government figures.
In Texas, Harvey displaced thousands of people, flooded roads and shut down many lawyers' offices for several days. Irma is threatening to do the same to South Florida. Texas has about 220,000 DACA recipients, and Florida more than 50,000.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the federal agency that processes program applications, did not respond to several messages about whether it would give Texans and Floridians affected by the storms any extra time or leeway if they lose paperwork.
In Houston, Catholic Charities is assisting people at its open sessions for immigrants seeking legal aid _ known as "charlas," or chats in Spanish _ with replacing documents lost in Harvey's floodwaters, applying for federal emergency aid or expediting applications under the deferred action program.
FIEL, a legal aid group for immigrants, is also assisting DACA recipients file their renewals before the deadline.
