Did you know that millions of people in China secretly live underground? 🏙️ Back in 1960, fearing a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union, Mao Zedong ordered the construction of an extensive underground city beneath Beijing. This hidden network included tunnels, bomb shelters, schools, and hospitals spanning 85 square kilometers across three to four levels.

By the 1980s, the nuclear threat faded, and this underground city was largely forgotten… until a housing crisis brought it back to life. As Beijing became overcrowded, local residents converted the tunnels and shelters into extremely cheap living spaces for college graduates.

Life underground is harsh: rooms are tiny, there is no natural light, and 30 people share a single bathroom and kitchen. Walls are often covered in fungus, and yet around 1 million people still live in this so-called “rat-trap” city. The government has legalized this arrangement, but the reality remains shocking.
