This isn't ranting in a vacuum. We played each "avoid" game and its replacement in the same window, sometimes literally on the same night. Then we asked: if we could only own one of these two, which one actually earns its spot?

The replacements aren't always lighter or simpler. Terra Mystica is heavier than Scythe. But the replacements deliver on the promise the original game's box makes—and that matters more than complexity.

We genuinely like some of these games. But when you compare them directly to better alternatives, the choice becomes clear. Your shelf space is limited. Your game nights are precious. Choose accordingly.
