Abstract
As the digitial and real world fuse more into one. Computer science is required to consider more how computational systems embed into the every day fabric of our existence. A promising direction involves exploiting findings from social psychology to inspire domain-specific machine learning techniques. In this talk, I will describe different approaches to solving the problem of the perception of social behaviour in the wild from detecting conversing groups to whether people are attracted to each other during conversations. Questions will be raised about the impact of the choice of sensing device (cameras, microphones, wearable sensors) in tackling these hard problems, as the numbers of people to be monitored increases from tens to hundreds, to thousands and how knowledge from social and behavioural psychological science can help us to manage possible solutions.
