As part of our BSc Live-in-Labs elective, we spent 10 immersive days in Alappad village, Kollam, Kerala, to understand rural life beyond textbooks and classrooms. This field-based learning experience allowed us to closely observe, interact with, and learn from a coastal community whose livelihood, resilience, and aspirations often go unheard.
Alappad is a fishing-dependent village where the sea shapes everyday life—economically, culturally, and emotionally. Through conversations with fishermen, women, elders, and youth, we heard poignant and honest stories about their struggles, uncertainties, health concerns, and changing environmental conditions. Fishing remains the primary source of income for many families, yet it is accompanied by risks, seasonal instability, and growing challenges.
What stood out most was the progressive mindset of the community. Despite financial limitations and occupational hardships, many families place strong importance on education, especially for their children. Parents expressed hope that education could open doors to safer, more stable futures, while still respecting their roots and traditions.
This village visit helped us gain a ground-level perspective on rural livelihoods, community dynamics, water and health concerns, and sustainable development. More than data collection, it was an experience of listening, observing, and understanding life through the villagers’ eyes.
This video captures our learning, reflections, and moments from Alappad—highlighting not just challenges, but also resilience, dignity, and hope.
