Here's how he describes the process:

It is an automatic coin sorter entirely made of LEGO. I designed this machine to avoid having to sort yourself and slowly. Indeed, the average flow rate of the machine is 100 parts per minute. The machine has 2 engines because it contains an upper part and a lower part which are distinguished according to their role. These two motors are connected to a transformer that plugs into a mains socket (no programming, only two motors that run continuously). It took me 6 months between the idea that came to me and the obtaining of the final model.

Its operating principle:
In order to better understand the mechanism, parts are sorted in two distinct steps: alignment and then separation of parts.
First, the pieces are poured into the closed hatch so as to contain about 70 pieces. A lever is turned clockwise, which will open the hatch, and cause the pieces to fall on a treadmill. It is from now on that the sorter becomes autonomous. The parts will advance on the treadmill and will encounter several wheel systems with tires that will hold the parts and thus moderate the flow until they move one behind the other (a total of 2 treadmills and 3 systems Wheels with tires). Since the thickness of a piece of 1, 2 or 5 cents is higher than that of half a 2 euro coin, aligning the pieces one by one was possible. This first step corresponds to the upper part of the machine whose mechanism is driven by the first motor.

Then the parts land vertically one after the other, through a slot, on a rail (the slot, the rail and the rest of the system are tilted outwards). This rail is inclined on the downward side, which makes it possible to advance the parts along a ramp which is progressively enlarged; Thus the parts are separated according to their diameter. When the height of the ramp becomes greater than the diameter of a part, the part falls into the compartment provided for this type of part. Each piece has a different diameter (and yes, the 50 centimes and 1 euro coin both come in a caddy, but they do have a different diameter), it took a ramp capable of distinguishing 8 sizes of Pieces whose difference in size between two pieces is sometimes less than 1 millimeter. This second stage corresponds to the lower part of the machine whose mechanism is driven by the second motor.
