🌱Grafting is an ancient technique used to make many many copies of a good quality fruit tree, or “mother tree.” This ensures that the tree will produce a good quality fruit. All fruit trees that have a variety name – from Gala Apples to Bartlett Pears – are made using some form of grafting.

🌱There are many different techniques to grafting, and Cleft Grafting is one of the most popular for durians.

🌱First, mature branches or “scions” are taken from a tree producing a delicious fruit. These branches are “vegetatively mature” meaning they produce fruits. The branches that are “active” or producing small buds are the best for a successful graft.

🌱The tip of scion is then sliced into a pointy “wedge” or “cleft.”

🌱Next, a baby tree grown from a seed, or a “rootstock” is chosen. The top of the baby tree is cut off and then the scion is inserted into the stem, creating one tree out of two trees!
It’s so amazing that trees can do this!

🌱When this tree grows up, it will produce fruits that are identical to mother-tree.

🌱All the famous durian varieties in the world like Musang King, Black Thorn, Puyat, and Monthong are made using grafting.
