Over the decades, several legendary filmmakers attempted to bring Kalki Krishnamurthy's epic novel Ponniyin Selvan to the silver screen, recognizing its grandeur and historical significance. The first major effort was by M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) in the late 1950s. MGR, an iconic actor and political figure, acquired the rights and even began pre-production, casting himself as Vandiyathevan. However, the project was shelved due to logistical challenges and MGR's personal accident, which forced him to halt the ambitious venture. Following this, in the 1980s, acclaimed director Mani Ratnam expressed interest in adapting the novel but found it too massive and technically challenging for the time, especially given the limitations in budget and technology.

In the 2000s, various attempts resurfaced, including a collaboration between director Shankar and actor Kamal Haasan, but that too didn't materialize due to scale, cost, and rights issues. It was only in the late 2010s that Mani Ratnam revived his long-pending dream project, leveraging advancements in filmmaking technology and support from Lyca Productions. Ratnam finally succeeded in making Ponniyin Selvan into a two-part magnum opus, with Ponniyin Selvan: I releasing in 2022, followed by Ponniyin Selvan: II in 2023. These films brought the epic saga to life, fulfilling a cinematic dream that had spanned more than six decades.
