Here is my little R2D2 smartphone controlled desktop droid. He is made out of a bubble bath container, with 2 micro servos hacked for continuous rotation in his legs. Inside you will find an arduino, bluetooth A2DP module, LEDs, sound board and batteries.

I designed an iOS and Android app that allows you to control R2 via a joystick or tilting the handset. I also added some fun features, such as R2 Dancing, Shock R2 and the good old projector.

R2 is controlled using Bluetooth, with no accessory needed on the smartphone :-)

R2 is not restricted to smartphone control, he can be autonomous. I added a small feather touch sensor in his front leg. Using this he can bump and navigate about randomly, making R2 noises as he goes.

Possibly the most unique feature of my R2 is the edge detection switch. If R2 senses the edge of a table for example, he will stop and scream - shaking his head!

I have tested him using an iPhone 3GS, 4, ipod touch, iPad and Galaxy S.

All in all a pretty sweet droid!
