This 1900 photograph captures the interior of the Revellín del Parián, as seen from the Puerta del Parián in Intramuros, Manila.

The Puerta del Parián was originally constructed to provide access to the Chinese trading district known as the Parián de Arroceros, located just east of Intramuros. It also connected to the bridge leading north toward Binondo.

A revellín (or ravelin) is a type of outwork fortification designed to protect the entrance to a fortified city. The Revellín del Parián was the first of its kind built in Intramuros. It was reconstructed and reshaped into a triangular form during the late 18th century.

The moat surrounding the fortifications were filled-in during the American period, as it was seen as a health hazard.

The area surrounding the Puerta and Revellín del Parián sustained damage during WW2, but was later restored. Today, it is home to the ASEAN Garden, a tranquil spot within the Walled City where visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk.
