TUKAA JYA || टुका ज्या || PROJECT BAJA NEPAL

‘'Tukaa Jya'’ is a Newah seasonal tune (song) which is been playing continuously from ancient period till date in Nepal. While ‘'Sina Jya'’ is played during the rice plantation festival, ‘'Tukaa: Jya’' is played while removing bushes that grows in between rice plant after plantation. Typically a Newar term, "tu" means tiny bushes that grow in between the rice plant, "kaa" means to take away and "jya" means task. So, "Tukaa: jya" means a task to take away the bushes that grow in between the rice plant.
This is very emotional song of a farmer couple, who had faced lots of sorrowful moments in the rainy season, they are passing through. The musician and lyricist had expressed those sorrowful moments of their life in this very popular and emotional tune (song) of Newa community.

Nimtaipu Tuka wona dyoo bani jala –
It crossed the mid day to evening while a couple working in the field
Baji ne nu misa dhayaan jeen chhu nake dhala- woman answered nothing to feed you while a man asked for lunch
Kani chhuya nenu dhayaan chhusi maru dhala-
i asked, “ let’s roast the corn and eat” but she said there is no any dried stalks of grains left for fire
Ugu taman bisiun wonaa nhyakan jhaa le lata-
I got angry and ran away resulting to fall into the Nettle greens
Chhen sa dugu pusa wa na pwacha piye lata- leftovered rice seeds are all used in rice plantation
Fukkan fakkan nasa twosa chhusi dakkon pyata- Foods, drinks and dried stalks of grain all are soaked by rain
Sawan ya jharee yana baigah fukka pyata- kitchen is all soaked by the rain of Srawan (the Nepali month that falls during July and August)
Dukkha hana chone mala jheegu thwo jeevan- We are passing through pain and sadness in our life
