This was our first backcountry camping trip at Frosty Mountain (20.9 km round trip with 1,231 meters of elevation). There are nine campsites available, and you have to book in advance. They're assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The trail is mostly along cliffs, so it can be a bit challenging if you're carrying extra weight. Some people even do it as a day hike! At the campsite, the only water source is a creek. So you’ll need a water purifier. We used the Pristine Water Purification System (30ml).

Bear spray and bug spray are a must! We also carried a bear bell. On the way up the mountain, you might encounter wildlife like deer, sooty grouse, and Columbian ground squirrels. These animals are abundant in Manning Provincial Park.

We started our hike from Lightning Lake, where we parked our car. On day one, we hiked up to the mountain and camped there. On the second day, we headed toward Mount Frosty, but we couldn’t quite make it to the summit. We got really close though! You’ll see that in the video.

The final stretch is extremely challenging: a 200-meter elevation gain in just 1 kilometer, with scrambling and loose rock. We went on August 31st, and there weren’t many people around. It felt like it was just the two of us.

Frosty Mountain is famous for its larches, which turn golden in the fall. Sadly, we missed the golden color, but we did get to see the beautiful green larches. They looked like something from another planet. From the top, you get stunning 360° views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Truly one of the most beautiful places in BC.
