I know, it doesn't make most people's lists because its not some dearly beloved classic of the Golden Age. But I'm voting it into my "Greats" list because I played this game a lot. So did my brother. I would go home from the arcade strategizing ways to stay alive longer, maximize score, time those bonuses and also shoot down those tricksy pipes. And none of the home ports later really could quite match the fidelity and all the options the arcade stuck in there. Some didn't include the rotating pipes, others didn't have all the bonus options, and most just didn't quite live up to the graphics, naturally.

Carnival comes along in the grand-tradition of shooting gallery games. It simulates a Carnival shooting gallery, with various targets to hit but makes it better by creating things only a game could give you. The dive-bombing ducks (who like to eat bullets for breakfast)… the mystery bonuses (plus or minus points or bullets)… and the spelling of the words BONUS in order to get… you guessed it, a BONUS.

What I often like about these old games is their play balance… they give you an easy level, sometimes two… but the difficulty ramps quickly. On purpose! How else are they going to make money if they don't kick you off quickly enough!? But if you don't feel like you can absolutely do better the next time, you might call it quits. So yeah… have to balance all that out in a very quarter-earning mentality. Definitely before the "Continue" feature started to become common place and became a quarter muncher approach of its own.

So yeah - if you're not familiar its worth playing. Good sounds, good play value, good variety. One of the strangest villains ever - the dive-bombing duck. Yeah… good stuff.
