Cynthia “Cyndee” Landrum is a leader in the U.S. federal government working to empower individuals to reach their highest potential so they can impact and transform communities. Informed by her experience at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Cyndee shares how Ron Heifetz’s work on adaptive leadership can guide public library leaders to use their “balcony view” to see the entirety of the community. This view supports an understanding of the opportunities and obstacles for public libraries and museums to advance community and social wellbeing. Health, equity, literacy, and economic development are examples of the many specific areas of action for collective wellbeing addressed by IMLS-supported projects. Specific initiatives include the Community Catalyst Initiative and subsequent report, Understanding The Social Wellbeing Impacts Of The Nation’s Libraries And Museums (2021). By using the trusted position that many libraries enjoy in our communities, Cyndee and hundreds of library and museum professionals across the U.S. and across the world can use their trusted position to build networks, offer new ways to practice, connect, and advance leadership for collective wellbeing.
