STORYLINE
The Solomons'' Parliament sat for the first time on Friday since choosing opposition leader Manasseh Sogavare as the new prime minister of the troubled islands.
In Thursday''s secret ballot vote among Parliament''s 50 lawmakers, Sogavare beat Deputy Prime Minister Fred Fono 28 votes to 22.
In his first series of political appointments, Sogavere on Friday named Charles Dausabea as his police minister and Nelson Ne''e as his tourism and culture minister, even though both are currently in custody.
Both men are accused of helping incite the violence, arson and looting that swept the Solomons'' capital Honiara after former premier Snyder Rini''s election as prime minister.
He was forced to resign from office eight days later.
Sogavare said that the two ministers were innocent until proven guilty.
But Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer on Saturday condemned the decision.
Downer said he would discuss the matter with Sogavare when he visits Honiara in a couple of weeks.
Prosecutors allege Dausabea told about 200 people in front of Parliament, where the riot began, that the opposition coalition had lost the vote and to "go and do what you have to do."
The pair are due to reappear in the Honiara Magistrate''s Court on May 9.
Special procedures were used to enable them take part from prison in Thursday''s prime ministerial election.
