Ogyeseowon Confucian Academy is dedicated to Yi Deok-hong (1541–1596) and his eldest son, Yi Si(1569–1636). The academy originated as Ogyejeongsa, a study hall established by Yi Deok-hong in 1570.

After the outbreak of the Japanese invasions in 1592, Yi Deok-hong accompanied King Seonjo to the temporary royal palace during his retreat, leaving Ogyejongsa abandoned and eventually destroyed. In 1600, Yi Si honored his father’s legacy by building Ogyeseodang Village Study Hall in Ssanggye Village (present-day Woncheon-ri, Andong).

However, the study hall was washed away in a flood in 1636. In 1663, local Confucian scholars initiated efforts to build a shrine, enshrining Yi Deok-hong’s spirit tablet. The site was elevated to the status of a Confucian academy in 1691. Another flood submerged the academy in 1707, prompting its relocation to its current site in 1711. The spirit tablet of Yi Si was additionally enshrined in this academy in 1724. Ogyeseowon was dismantled in the late 19th century following the nationwide decree to abolish Confucian academies but resumed the performance of veneration rituals from 1919. In 1978, the shrine was reconstructed.
