Tsumago-juku is a beautifully preserved post town located in Nagiso, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture. It was the 42nd of 69 post towns on the Nakasendo, an ancient trade route connecting Kyoto and Edo (modern Tokyo) during the Edo period (1603-1867). Tsumago-juku is known for its successful preservation efforts, which began in the 1960s. The town has maintained its Edo-period appearance, with cars prohibited on the main street during the day and power lines hidden to preserve its old-world charm. The town is a popular starting point for the scenic hike on the Nakasendo Trail to Magome-juku, another well-preserved post town. The nine-kilometer trail takes about three hours and offers stunning views of cypress forests and rural landscapes. Tsumago-juku offers a unique glimpse into Japan's feudal past and is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and traditional Japanese culture.
