A 3-year-old girl died after an inflatable castle she was playing on was swept up into the air by a freak gale in a southern Chinese town, local authorities said.

The government of Tianyang County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said the accident happened last Thursday evening, when a gust of wind blew away the bouncy castle, which was situated outside a supermarket.

The 3-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after falling from the castle and later died in hospital, the local authority said.

Ms Liu, a witness, said the wind was so strong she could not close her shop door by herself at the time.

"I took shelter from the wind ... and saw the inflatable castle fly [up into the air] when I turned around," said another witness, Mr Zhou.

"The child was in a coma when she came in for emergency treatment. ... There was still a faint heartbeat, but her head was deformed. We immediately began emergency treatment, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and asked surgeons for a consultation. About 40 minutes later, however, the child died," said Zhu Jian, director of the emergency treatment department of Tianyang County Hospital.

Unverified surveillance footage circulated on the Internet showed the bouncy castle, the size of a large yacht, suddenly being swept up into the air. A woman tried to grab it but wasn't able to stop it being blown away.

Li Zhongji, an official with the county's work safety administration, said the bouncy castle was an unlicensed business and police are still investigating the accident.
