In 1989, CPH released a copyrighted edition of Law and Gospel. It is identical to the 1929 edition, except that a new preface by J. A. O. Preus was added. The 1989 edition was not consulted in the production of this online edition.

The Proper Distinction between Law Gospel are transcripts of Dr. Walther's Luther Hour Lectures given at Concordia Seminary, in St. Louis Missouri, Sunday evenings, beginning September 12, 1884 to November 6, 1885. There are 39 total lectures which address Walther's 25 Thesis regarding the Law/Gospel Distinction.

Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm (C.F.W.) Walther (1811–1887) was a prominent German-American Lutheran theologian, pastor, and church leader. Born in Saxony, Germany, Walther studied theology at the University of Leipzig and was deeply influenced by Lutheran orthodoxy and confessionalism. He emigrated to the United States in 1838 with a group of German Lutherans seeking religious freedom, eventually settling in Missouri.

Walther became a key figure in the formation of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS), serving as its first president from 1847 to 1850, and again from 1864 to 1878. His leadership and theological convictions shaped the LCMS into one of the most conservative and confessionally strict Lutheran denominations in America.

Walther emphasized the importance of adhering to Lutheran confessions, the proper distinction between Law and Gospel, and the authority of the Bible. His works, such as The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel and Church and Ministry, remain influential in Lutheran theology. He also served as a professor and president at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, training future pastors and theologians.

Walther's legacy is one of deep commitment to confessional Lutheranism, and he is often regarded as the father of the LCMS.
