Diamagnetically levitated piece of pyrolytic carbon starts to rotate with a right amplitude of vibration. There were other frequencies, I didn't manage to get on film that made the graphite piece rotate, such as 8Hz and 18Hz, but with 25 Hz the effect was strongest and 25 Hz was the only frequency that made the spinning first accelerate and then stop, repeating this behavior.


As with the "water walks on water" phenomenon - how a droplet keeps bouncing on surface tension on specific amplitudes and frequencies, I think the initiation of spin has to do with constructive interference and as the piece starts to spin too fast it gets out of sync and destructive interference makes the piece of carbon stop spinning.

The magnetic array isn't moving just up and down, there is also slight whisking motion that enables the spin.
