Описание к видео Closet Organization | Local 7 Lifestyles | Lasting Order Professional Organizing Services

Amy Payne, CPO®, shares master closet organizing tips with Lifestyles host, Ange.

Well, if you're like me, your closet's the place you cram stuff, especially when company's coming, and often it just stays there. Our Pro-Organizer Amy Payne is here for appearance 71. Welcome back! It's just—

Thank you!

This is historic!

It's amazing to be here in person again.

I know!

I love it!

I've been seeing you in that screen over there forever, and that's worked like it worked. And we're grateful that we had Zoom, but now it's so great to have you back in here.

Yes. So much easier to have a conversation with a real human next to you.

Isn't it? We don't have to worry about if the technology is going to work, either. Well, you know...closets. Of course, they're important. We all need them. But if we don't have them organized, then things just get lost in the shuffle.

Right.

So where do we start?

So master closet...First thing you want to do is get everything out of the closet that doesn't belong. You'd be surprised how many people have—

I wouldn't be!

OK maybe Ange wouldn't be surprised how many people have papers and memorabilia and bags—

Tools!

Tools, ok . . . And all kinds of things in a closet that really aren't clothing related. So it's fine if you want to have, like, a little safe in there, or you have a bin of special memorabilia or things, but for the most part, get everything out of the closet that's not clothes. Then you want to start by pulling your clothes out and sort through them. Figure out: Do they fit me anymore? Do I like that? We were just talking about clothes fitting right before we got on air. Do I like them? Are they stained? Are they ripped? You know, what's going on with the clothes? Are they functional? Are they things that I like and I will use? The rule is the 80/20 rule, right? We wear 20 percent of our clothes 80 percent of the time. So you have certain go-to items that you're going to go to all the time.

Right. Of course, of course.

From the rest of them, pair down, get rid of the stuff that you don't want. Then, we start sorting things by the use of it. So sometimes in closets, I come across lots of sportswear—sports meaning, like, sports teams. Or you're a big fan of like the Cubs or IU or the Cardinals or different, you know, UK, or things like that.

So sometimes we'll make a special section just for all your fan, you know, fan wear, and then we'll make a section for dresses, long sleeve, short sleeved. Some people really like their closet in color order.

I've seen that before. And I get it. I mean, I totally get it.

It's fun. So if you decide . . . it depends on how you decide you want to wear your clothes that day. I personally decide what I'm going to wear by the length of the sleeve. So I like to organize my closet by long-sleeved heavy wear all the way down to tank top or camisole-type shirts. Other people like to do it by color. So if they want to wear a black shirt, they go and they have all their long sleeve, short sleeved, everything together. It really just depends on you.

It's a good system, I mean, I have to rotate my clothes so this outfit will go to the head of the line, so I'll know I wore it.

Oh that's smart.

If I don't, then I'll look at myself on television and go, "well you just wore that last week."

Yes, for TV purposes that would definitely help to keep track of which clothes you wore more recently than others. Keeping your clothes organized by having a system—whether it's color or by sleeve length or having all winter on top, summer on the bottom—whatever it is that you decide, have a system and understand that system. Then, as far as hanging versus folding . . . people have dressers. Usually we fold things like t-shirts, leggings, shorts typically go in a drawer. Dresses and skirts are hung. A lot of times, pants are hung but jeans are folded. And then t-shirts, it just depends. Like I have nicer t-shirts—

Me too!

—that I don't want to get wrinkled.

Right. I'm with you!

And then I have t-shirts that just get folded. So it just kind of depends. Then, you may even have things like ski gear or other kinds of sporting goods that you may not wear very often. Maybe put those in a little bin, label it, and put it up high on a shelf.

So listen, if you need to know more, just call Amy and she'll help you do it. Lasting Order is the name of the company. They can help you in so many ways. I've really appreciated your help with my friends in the past. So give her a call! Thank you so much. Welcome back!
