Transcript:
Hello! My name is Andrew Tolman. I am a Sign Language Interpreter here in Portland, Oregon. This video is the State of The Union Speech 2019. This video also has another interpreter, Amanda Hays. For the last year, Amanda and I have been fully immersed in political and activist interpreting. As you may already know, Interpreter training programs require new interpreters to practice their interpreting skills by listening to videos and slowly getting better and better. Once an interpreter graduates, this practice is replaced by hands-on experience building at work, where interpreters pick up specialized signs, concepts, and jargon. One major disparity of standardized vocabulary is in the political realm. Through the last year, Amanda and I have realized that many political concepts and signs have not yet been officially decided upon. On top of that, most political and activist spaces are also inaccessible. A good example of this political inaccessibility is the State of The Union speech. There was no interpreter or signer at the SOTU. This is unacceptable. So, that leads to the point of this video. The first reason we made this video is accessibility. We want SOTU information to become accessible to the Deaf community. Transcripts with the full wording are good, but they're definitely not enough. You have a right to your language, your expressions, and to decide what the information presented here means for you. Hearing interpreters should support your right. The second purpose of this video is practice. Just like the interpreter making their way through an ITP program, this video is our 'practice'. Some of our fingerspelling, sign production, and sign choices are not fully clear, or wrong. We are not afraid to admit it. The two of us are just like any other interpreter - we are not perfect! Unfortunately, direct feedback is rare. So this video is our chance to directly engage with you - the Deaf Community - and lets you tell us your preferred signs, and what you envision as a successful political interpreter. Please, as you watch this video, take notes of comments, adjustments, fixes, or other types of feedback. The tougher the better - bring it on! We want full, honest feedback from all of you. When we are open to making ourselves better based on the feedback directly for you, it makes us better interpreters but also is an investment in our ability to help you access all parts of life. Thank you.

(Visual Description)
President Donald Trump stands at a podium in a black suit. Behind him sits Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker of The House Nancy Pelosi. In the chambers, people are wearing a variety of clothing, while one group of women specifically is dressed in all white. The screen is split, with President Trump on the left side and the video of the sign language interpreter on the right. The interpreters are wearing black and gray and switch roughly every 20 minutes.
