Defense-Update VideoReport: RAE 2013 Live Demonstration

The Russian Arms Expo (RAE 2013) held at the Nizhny Tagil proving ground in the Russian Sverdlovsk region offered a fascinating opportunity to see the Russian land power at its best. With live fire of main battle tanks, self propelled artillery, tactical and rocket artillery up to the 300mm Smerch size, and TOS-1A MLRS firing live thermobaric rockets, demonstrating the weapon's devastating effect. The following video highlights some of those displays, more will be aired in the upcoming days.

Several tanks of the T-72/T-90 series were displayed at RAE 2013, in live firing and mobility demonstrations. Among these tanks were two modernized variants of the T-72, the type designed for urban warfare and another, fitted with the new Arena-3 Active Protection System. A complete line of airborne and amphibious armored vehicles, including the Sprut SD, BMD-3M armed with 125mm and 100mm cannons, 30mm automatic gun and 120mm mortar...

Among air defense assets, the BUK-2M (SA-17) was displayed in the tracked and wheeled versions along with ZSU-23x4 Shilka and 2S6M1 Tunguska anti-aircraft cannons.

The BMPT fire support combat vehicle was displayed in the firing demonstration, as part of a new tank squad formation, maximizing maneuverability, firepower and flexibility of an armored force. This variant is actually a limited production prototype built around a Tank chassis. The new BMPT72 unveiled at the show utilizes standard T-72 chassis withdrawn from active service.
