The phenomenon of Georgian women's chess is one of the greatest mysteries in chess. In the second half of the 20th century, Georgian women's chess players dominated the world completely. This dominance was initiated by Nona Gaprindashvili. After becoming the Women's World Champion, she raised the standard of play to heights never before seen. Women's chess came very close to men's chess. Nona played against men and participated in men's tournaments. Nona's success inspired and paved the way for other outstanding Georgian chess players – Maia Cheburdanidze, Nana Alexandria, and Nana Ioseliani.

It was at one of the men's tournaments that Nona created her masterpiece. Here in Dortmund in 1974, she played against a German chess player. This game became one of the most astonishing and impressive, even in men's chess!
